Handbook: Classroom Policies and Information

General Classroom Policies

Schedule- School starts the day after Memorial Day and ends in May the last week before Memorial Day (May 21/22).  We will have an end-of-year program to celebrate your student with songs and a short play they perform for their families! During session, our class follows the schedule of the West Ada District elementary schools. When the children in West Ada do not have class, neither do we.  This includes inservice and snow days.  A final preschool calendar will be available as soon as possible.  Schedule subject to change if West Ada changes their schedule.

Fees- There is an initial non-refundable registration fee of $65.00. This holds your child’s spot until the first day of school and helps with curriculum and classroom supply costs.

Tuition- Tuition is due on the first day of preschool each month. Tuition is $110 each month, regardless of school schedule. There is a late fee of $10.00 after the 15th of the month. Venmo (@Megan-Joy-Smith), cash, or checks are accepted.  Please make all checks payable to: Megan Smith.  A tuition envelope will come home at the end of the month for you to return the next preschool day.

Teacher Absence-  In the rare event that I am unable to teach preschool, class will be cancelled.  If class is cancelled due to teacher illness/absence for more than 2 days total per school year, tuition will be adjusted $10/day missed after the initial 2 days.

Immunizations- The Idaho Immunization Law requires that children of grades pre-school through 12 shall provide proof of immunization or sign an exemption form. Please provide a copy of up-to-date immunization records within two weeks of starting school. The immunization record must show the date (month, day, and year) your child was given each shot. If you do not have an immunization record or your child has not received all required shots, call your doctor or local health department for an appointment.

Parents may choose to exempt their child from the state school immunization requirements for personal, medical, or religious reasons.  If an exemption is submitted, and there is an outbreak of the disease for which the exemption is signed, the exempted student may be excluded from school for the period deemed necessary by public health officials.

Wellness Policy:

We will follow the guidelines from our health district regarding quarantine and exposure protocols in case of a serious outbreak of contagious illness. This may be different from our regular wellness policy below.

Preschool children can spread germs very quickly.  To ensure the health of all our preschool friends, please do NOT bring your child to school when they are ill or have experienced any of the following symptoms in the last 24 hours:

Fever

Diarrhea, vomiting or an upset stomach

Unusual or unexplained loss of appetite, fatigue, irritability, or headache

Green discharge from the nose

Uncontrollable coughing

Discharge or drainage from eyes, ears or open sores.

Unexplained rash or other contagious illness

Please keep in mind children are welcome back 24 hours after symptoms no longer exist or final medication has been administered for any diagnosed condition.

Please contact Ms. Megan if your child contracts chicken pox, head lice, pink eye, or another serious contagious illness.

If the entire class has to quarantine due to exposure at preschool and class is cancelled, I will adjust tuition for anything longer than 2 days at $10/day. This also applies to class missed due to Ms. Megan being ill or out of town.  Tuition is not adjusted for an individual child’s illness or missed days.  I will provide students with activities that they missed and will work with parents to provide learning activities if it is a prolonged absence.

Discipline Policy- Preschoolers are learning manners, social skills, self-control and self-expression.  Our classroom will have positive reinforcement, a regular schedule, and clear expectations to help learn and practice these skills.

In the event a child has trouble controlling his or her behavior, together we will try to identify the problem and how we can solve it.  In some instances, I will redirect the child to a different activity or discuss possible ways to handle themselves.  If the behavior persists, the child may choose to sit in our “bunny chair” to take a short break from the activity or chose to rejoin the activity.  I have found that when students are given a choice, they have ownership in the solution and are quickly able to get control of their behavior.  If there are serious concerns, parents will be contacted.  Please let me know if any big changes or problems are occurring at home which may affect your child at school so I can be understanding of the situation.

Drop-off and Pick-up- Please do not block the neighbors’ driveways when dropping off your child.   Children will come in through the small garage door to come into the house.  I will have it open at the start of the school day.  If it is open, feel free to send your child in.  At the end of school, we will be waiting outside for parents.  My driveway is longer, so it is okay to “double park” so we have can fit more cars into the driveway.

Field trips- We will have a few field trips throughout the year, starting with a trip to the pumpkin patch in the fall.  Parents are always welcome!  In most cases, younger siblings will be able to attend as well.  For one or two of our field trips (most likely the pumpkin patch) we may combine both classes and go together.  This means that the field trip may be scheduled on a day you do not normally have preschool.  If this may conflict with your or your child’s schedule, please let me know and I will do my best to plan around it. Field Trips may require additional cost.

Snack Box- We rotate a snack box amongst the children. This becomes an exciting thing for the kids. When it is your child’s turn, please let them be a part of choosing what to bring for the snack. Bring enough for each child, and please encourage healthy choices. We will have water to drink.

Birthdays- Your child will have the snack box on or near his/her birthday week.  You are welcome to have a special treat in honor of your child’s birthday.  Your child will also receive a “birthday spotlight” to fill out and share with the class.   If your child’s birthday is in the summer, we will celebrate near the half-birthday date.

Library Day- Once a week we will have library day.  Your child will choose a book from my library and bring it home.  Students will return it the following week and choose a new book to take home.

Meet & Greet- Prior to the first week of school, I will host a Meet and Greet for you and your preschooler.  This will give them a chance to meet me, check out their new school, and answer any questions.   A sign-up genius will go out and you can select a time that works best for you.
